Current Opportunities at the Sutton Center

Seasonal Employment

Each year, the Sutton Avian Research Center hires a number of seasonal field technicians and interns. These positions may include endangered species husbandry and/or field work on birds. Many positions are for periods running from March through August, but we occasionally need technicians for other times of the year, and we sometimes have positions that need to be filled immediately.

2024: We are looking for technicians with very strong bird identification skills to survey birds across Oklahoma from early April through July for the second Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas. Applicants should have a strong background both in field ornithology and in working with a wide variety of people. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Prior bird atlasing experience helpful but not required.  Responsibilities include respectful interactions with local residents and landowners, surveying atlas blocks for breeding birds throughout the state, and maintaining accurate records. Good bird ID skills by sight and sound needed.  Must be able to work independently, be willing to travel throughout Oklahoma on a continuous basis, often on back roads in poor condition, and (most likely) camp much of the time ($20 per diem to help offset camping expenses). Oklahoma has great habitat diversity, supporting Swainson’s Warblers in the southeast to Golden Eagles in the northwest, and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers in the southwest to Scarlet Tanagers in the northeast.  Salary $2,700/month. Motivated applicants send letter, resume, and 3 references. Contact Dan Reinking dan@suttoncenter.org (preferred contact method).

We are looking for Summer 2024 interns for our Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken and Masked Bobwhite endangered species captive breeding programs and for Lesser Prairie-chicken surveyors for Spring 2024. Prairie-chicken applicants should send a cover letter, resume and three references to apcsutton@gmail.com, and quail or LPC survey applicants should send the same information to dwolfe@suttoncenter.org.

SUTTON AVIAN RESEARCH CENTER, P.O. BOX 2007, BARTLESVILLE, OK 74005. We often start filling upcoming positions several months prior to the time the work begins, so applying early will increase the likelihood of being hired.
